Three local schools undertook creative brief

Partnership inspires next generation as part of MGM’s 25th anniversary year

Fife based MGM Timber, one of Scotland’s largest independent timber merchants, has announced the winner of its 25th anniversary competition following Craft, Design and Technology pupils from Glenrothes, Dunfermline and Woodmill High Schools battling it out for the top spot.

Briefed with creating a decorative timber feature using materials sourced from MGM Timber in autumn last year, pupils from Glenrothes High School won the challenge. The team of four, Andrew Gallacher, Lauchlan Graham, Ryan Lawson and Harry Summers caught the judges’ eyes after designing a miniature forklift card holder made with six different types of wood. The pupils’ creation will now take pride of place in the MGM Glenrothes branch.

Michael Donaldson, Commercial Manager for MGM Timber, said: “Many people in the timber industry are the second or third generation which means we need to do all that we can to inspire the next generation of skilled workers across the supply chain. Traditional occupations, such as carpentry or joinery, are invaluable to our heritage and local economy.

“I hope our schools partnership will help to encourage some of the pupils to consider a career within the trades industry. I was very impressed with their creative thinking and professional standards of work, and Glenrothes High School’s forklift card holder will look brilliant in our Glenrothes branch. On behalf of everyone at MGM Timber, I would like to congratulate all of the pupils for their efforts. Who knows, we may see some of the pupils approach MGM about job opportunities in the future!”

The winning pupils will receive £200 gift vouchers for a store of their choice.

Stuart McLeay, a teacher at Glenrothes High School who supported the pupils in their winning efforts said: “I am absolutely delighted for the team. They put so much thought and effort into the feature, spending time after school on the design and putting the skills they’ve learnt throughout the school year to good use. It was a great experience for them and I hope it will encourage some of the pupils to continue their education in CDT. A massive well done!”

Cllr Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s Depute Leader and Spokesperson for Planning and Economy, said: “A massive well done goes out to Glenrothes High School, and the other schools that took part in this competition.

“I am delighted that MGM Timber is one of our local employers that is working with our schools. This is just the kind of innovative partnership that is designed to inspire young Fifers and to encourage more businesses to come and work with our young people and their schools.

“At Fife Council we are committed to providing all our young people with the right education, training and experience to get into fulfilling jobs and careers. Schools play a crucial role in preparing pupils for employment, and we also know that it’s through partnerships with the business community that we can make a fundamental difference in equipping young people with essential skills and knowledge.

“This is just one of a range of employability and entrepreneurship programmes that are taking place across Fife to create a vibrant enterprise culture, produce motivated, work-ready pupils and promote social inclusion and mobility.”
