Designing your new kitchen should be an exciting and enjoyable experience. The kitchen is the heart of your home, you use it every day – so it’s important that you are equipped with all the right information to help you make the experience as enjoyable and straightforward as possible. At MGM Kitchens, we understand that planning a new kitchen project can be a bit daunting. It’s not an everyday purchase, with so many design, material, colour and new appliance and technology choices, where do you begin? That is why, with the help of our designers, we have created the following 6-step process guide to help you along the way.
Step one: Consider the functions your kitchen must serve
First of all, you should consider what functions you need your kitchen to serve. Would you like a dining area? Are you an avid cook or baker and need ample worktop space? Would you like a space where you can work from home? Do you like to entertain guests? Do you need to maximise storage space? These are all things to consider early on when thinking about a new kitchen as the answers to these questions will greatly impact what your final design will look like.
Step two: Agree your budget
Bearing in mind your needs for the space, now is the time to set a reasonable budget. Deciding this early on will help you to make decisions as you progress. It is also important to communicate this clearly when it comes to meeting with your designer. People can sometimes be reluctant to share this with their designer but knowing your budget allows them to maximise what can be created within your means and help you make informed decisions.
Step three: Create your kitchen wishlist
This is where the excitement begins, get stuck into perusing interiors magazines, kitchen brochures and browsing the web for design inspiration! Pinterest is a great place to go for inspo and to create your own mood board for your new kitchen as it allows you to browse and easily save images that you like as you go and if you find a particular photo that catches your eye, it will suggest other similar images. Other hugely helpful sources of inspiration include Houzz, Facebook and Instagram.
Step four: Understand and identify your preferred style
Once you’ve built up a substantial mood board, now is a good time to take a look at all the photos you’ve saved and brochure pages you’ve bookmarked and identify any recurring design or colour themes in your preferences. For instance, what core style do you appear to be gravitating towards? Is it sleek modern designs, more ornate traditional designs or is it somewhere in-between with a transitional look? For another example, what colours are catching your eye? Are you more interested in bright, dark or neutral colours? Figuring this out will set the overall tone of your kitchen design
Step 5: Measuring up and meeting your Designer
Now that you have a good idea of how you want your kitchen to function and your preferred style, now is the time to find a tradesman who will do your installation and arrange a consultation with a professional kitchen designer. Before meeting with your designer, you or your tradesman will need to take measurements of your new kitchen space in order to create a detailed floorplan. Your designer will need this floorplan to get right to work on your new kitchen design.
Step six: Making your final selections
Your designer will guide you throughout the entire process, but now it’s time to make your selections and start bringing your dream kitchen to life. At this stage you’ll agree the final layout, furniture brand, colour scheme, worktops, flooring, splashback, and appliances. From here, you can simply sit back and let the professionals take care of the delivery and installation and you’ll be enjoying your stunning new kitchen in no time and for years to come.
